2009 Ultra High Relief Coin Arrivals

The first of the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins has started to arrive in the hands of eager collectors.

After a few weeks of watching estimated shipping dates fluctuate, the first coins began to ship on February 6, 2009. The first coin received in hand by a collector was reported the following Monday on February 9, 2009 by a member of social network site Coin Network. Closely following this time, there were a few other mentions of coins received.

More details surrounding the number of coins ordered and number of coins actually produced by the US Mint has also recently surfaced. In the first day of sales, customers placed orders for 28,173 coins. After the first five days of sales the number of orders had climbed to 41,664.

The US Mint continues to have trouble obtaining enough blanks to produce the Ultra High Relief Double Eagle. A ceremony was held at the Philadelphia Mint on February 3, 2009 to open a new exhibit highlighting the journey to recreate the 1907 Double Eagle. During his comments, Mint Director Edmund Moy mentioned that the US Mint has only been able to produce 29,000 coins. This suggests that anyone who has placed an order after the first day might be in store for a lengthy delay.

The coins remain available for sale on the US Mint's website. The price of the coins has now risen to $1,278, tracking the increasing price of gold. Every time the average price of gold moves across a new $50 threshold, the price of the Ultra High Relief Double Eagle at the US Mint has a corresponding $50 increase.
