Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Release Date

Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Release Date

The United States Mint recently published a 2009 Scheduled Products Listing which provides an exact release date for the highly anticipated Ultra High Relief Gold Double Eagle

According to the schedule posted, the coins will be available on January 22, 2009. This will make it the first collector gold coin offered by the US Mint for the year. The other collectible gold coins which will be offered by the US Mint during 2009, such as the American Gold Eagle and American Gold Buffalo, do not have release dates scheduled yet.

There had been some speculation about whether the US Mint would be able to release the coins in January 2009. There have been news reports that the US Mint was having difficulty procuring the specialized gold blanks necessary to produce the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle. The reports stated that delays had pushed back the start of full scale production of the coins at the West Point Mint. Either the US Mint was able to obtain the blank supply or obtain at least enough for an initital production run.

Pricing and ordering details for the coin have not yet been announced. However, the unconfirmed "whisper number" is $1,200 per coin. The final price may in fact end up high, since the price of gold has been climbing over the past month. Additionally, it has been suggested that the US Mint may need to impose household ordering limits on the coin, at least initially.

As soon as final details are available, they will be posted on this site. Stay tuned!
