US Mint Releases Details on Ultra High Relief Double Eagle
On May 2, 2008 the United States Mint provided further details on the proposed recreation of Augustus Saint Gaudens' Ultra High Relief Gold Double Eagle coin. The US Mint's intention to recreate the masterpiece was officially announced on March 13, 2008 at during a CCAC meeting.
Specific details of the upcoming coin are as follows:
- Only 2009 dated coins will be minted. The date will be printed in Roman Numerals as "MMIX."
- Coins will go on sale early in 2009 and will be minted to demand.
- Sales may continue into 2010 for the 2009-dated coins if inventory exists.
- Gold blanks will be 27 millimeters in diameter. The resulting coin will be more than 50% thicker than the one ounce American Gold Eagle Coin.
- Changes to the obverse design of the coin will include the addition of 4 stars for a total of 50. The Roman
- Numeral date for 2009 will be used.
- Changes to the reverse design of the coin will include the addition of the motto "In God We Trust."
- The edge of the coin will included raised edge lettering with the motto "E Pluribus Unum" with stars between the letters.
